About this book

This is the first complete edition of Schleiermacher's 1820/21 lectures on education, which have hitherto only been available in a drastically abridged version concentrating on the topic of "Punishment and discipline". Notes taken by an unknown student, and published here in modern spelling, clearly show that this concentration does not do justice to Schleiermacher's theory of education. The text is accompanied by a detailed introduction, numerous explanatory notes and a comprehensive subject index.

"Terminons par un point qu'il ne cesse de répéter et qui concerne aussi bien les parents que les éducateurs et les professeurs, bref tous ceux qui se consacrent à la tâche éducative. Il s'agit des punitions et des récompenses. Schleiermacher cherche à convaincre que ces procédés ne sont pas dignes de guider un homme, défini comme agens (cf. 71, 101, 189), donc - comme nous l'avons déjà signalé - comme foncièrement actif. L'éducateur est sollicité de stimuler l'intérêt des éduqués: c'est le seul remède proposé par l'auteur contre l'apathie et la désorientation."
