Online, offline, airline, guideline, line in the sand, the horizon – lines are omnipresent in our daily lives. They also play a central role in the arts, philosophy, and science. Lines are as basic to our understanding of the world as images, writing, and numbers, and they operate in different ways. The volume presents reflections about lines from the domains of philosophy, mathematics, ethnography, anthropology, cartography, and art theory.

"Das Buch Linienwissen und Liniendenken lebt geradezu von solchen Differenzen der Wissensbestände und der Denkweisen, in deren Zentrum die Linie (hier verstanden als Gattungsbezeichnung) steht. In Anlehnung an die von Ferdinand de Saussure entwickelte Sprachtheorie könnte man sagen, dass die verschiedenen Bedeutungen des Linienwissens jeweils erst aus deren Differenzen bestimmbar sind, die dieses Wissen in verschiedensten Bereichen über Jahrhunderte erfahren hat. Der Band ist klug und der Rezeption förderlich eingerichtet."
