About this book

Written in 1696 for the education of the heir to the French throne, Fénelon’s Aventures de Télémaque quickly became the most widely read book of the 18^th century due to its intense criticism of Ludwig XIV. This study explores the interest readers took in the book, the strategies pursued by translators and publishers, and the ways the book was read by nobles, the bourgeoisie, scholars, and theologians in the Age of Enlightenment.
