Gregory Wood is Associate Professor of History and Director of the Honors Program at Frostburg State University. He is the author of Retiring Men: Manhood, Labor, and Growing Old in America, 1900–1960.

While there is a huge scientific, legal, and social policy literature on cigarette smoking, relatively little has been written about its history. This is surprising given that until the 1970s smoking was ubiquitous in American life and integral to much of American culture. We know little about the impact of smoking and addiction on the way people lived or worked and even less from the perspective of the smoker. Gregory Wood's innovative book begins to answer these questions by shifting our attention to the history of smoking in the twentieth-century workplace. Clearing the Air makes important contributions in the fields of social, labor, and business history as well as the history of the field of occupational health.
