Overall, the book is a significant contribution to scholarship on the McCarthy era in the way it weaves the complex histories of these individuals associated with JAFRC, using New York City as the backdrop. The narrative is well placed, the anaylsis perceptive and the sourcing meticulous. Above all, it is very well written and reads in most parts like the best of biographies.

is a welcome reminder that the reactionary-inspired, fear-based politics of six decades ago can be a salutary subject to consider in 2015.
